A campaign in four moves

Start small enough to begin. Build strong enough to last.

Listen before leading

01

What are students actually experiencing?

  • Ask one focused question, not ten vague ones.
  • Offer an anonymous way to respond.
  • Look for patterns without exposing personal stories.
  • Reflect back what you heard before choosing a solution.

Choose one clear ask

02

What specific change would make support easier?

  • Name the problem in one sentence.
  • Identify who can make the decision.
  • Choose an action that is concrete and measurable.
  • Explain how students can help implement it.

Build a student team

03

Who needs to be part of this work?

  • Invite students with different experiences and perspectives.
  • Share roles so one person does not carry everything.
  • Set group norms for privacy and respect.
  • Find an adult advisor who listens and follows through.

Make the meeting count

04

How do we move adults from listening to acting?

  • Bring a short summary of what students shared.
  • Lead with your requested action.
  • Ask who owns the next step and by when.
  • Send a written recap and schedule a follow-up.

Say it your way

You do not need the perfect words to start the right conversation.

To a counselor

“Students are talking about this, and we want to help create a response that is safe, useful, and shaped with youth input.”

To an administrator

“We have identified one barrier students face when trying to get support. Can we meet to propose a practical change?”

To another student

“You do not have to share anything personal. We are listening for what would make support at school easier to understand and reach.”
